While celebrating the birth of our wonderful country there are some safety guidelines and precautions that your family should brush up on before beginning your holiday weekend.
Grilling Safety
Whatever your Fourth of July Weekend plans may be, we know that some part of your summer will revolve around a grill. Whether your grill is gas or charcoal, it’s easy to get distracted with all of the holiday hoopla. “That’s why it’s important to remember that July is a peak month for grilling fires,” says Thomas Bumgardner, attorney with the Bumgardner Law Office. To avoid any harm or injury to your friends or family, make some grilling rules for
everyone to follow:
- Gas leaks, blocked tubes or even propane tanks can cause grill fires and explosions. While however unlikely, keep smaller children away from the grill in case they accidentally bump into anything.
- This may go without saying, but avoid grilling indoors or a garage. Basically avoid any enclosed area that could possibly catch on fire (and if the weather is nice out, who would want to be grilling inside any way?)
- When you set up your grill, make sure it is about two feet away from the siding of the house, deck or any branches or outdoor equipment that is flammable.
Water Safety
Also known as one of the hottest months of the year, July has many families turning to water activities in order to stay cool. But even with all the fun in the sun, there are still precautions to take in order to stay safe:
- If you’re spending your holiday on the lake, review the safe boating practices with everyone who is planning to get on board.
- Even if you are on a boat, alcohol rules still apply. If you are the designated boat driver, do not consume alcohol before or while operating the vehicle.
- Double check that there are enough life preservers on hand for every passenger.
- If you’re spending your day lounging at the pool, keep a first aid kit near by and remind kids to avoid running near the edge.
Firework Safety
The safest way to experience fireworks this holiday is by going to a show that is handled and put on by professionals. “Many states outlaw citizens from setting of their own fireworks”, says Bumgardner. “So heading to a Fourth of July show is a fun alternative.” There are over 50,000 fires caused each year by fireworks alone. While they are a great way to celebrate this festive holiday, always take the proper precautions before handling fireworks:
